It’s been a busy week at our house, as I’m sure it has at yours. Last week I finished with a book to be released on the 15th of this month. At the present, I’m doing a final edit on a book to be released December 1. Something is happening all the time here.
You can teach an old dog new tricks. We’ve learned about ordering take out food online. We live about five minutes from a Domino’s Pizza. I can order online, watch the progress of the preparation, and my hubby can jump in the car and go. He said when he drives up to the window it opens and someone says, “Are you Jerry?” He answers it is and his pizza is handed to him. Cool.
Our youngest grandchild is spending the night with us, so it will be pizza, my favorite. I’m sure he’ll want to tag along to pick it up. He is also behind on Netflix. There are a lot of new movies he hasn’t seen.
Each year we make apple butter the old fashioned way. Outside in a brass kettle. We will do this again Monday. This is something that has been handed down to us from our ancestors. The stirrer we use is probably over 100 years old. The kettle was my grandmother’s and probably my great-grandmother’s.
When I was growing up, each Labor Day was apple butter making day. I remember my mother getting up early and peeling the apples. As she and my grandmother peeled, they cooked them in the open kettle. My grandmother always put a silver dollar in the bottom of the kettle. I have no idea why, but it works as well without the silver dollar.
This is an all day venture. We have some friends that help us. The kettle is heavy when we take it off the fire, and you have to work quickly to fill and seal the jars. All in all, it’s a good day. Our day will go a little faster than my parents and grandparents did. Our apples are already cooked.
We’re getting some good response to our writers retreat in June. Several people have replied that they want to attend. The theme is “Fill My Cup” and it begins June 12-15 at Paris Landing State Park in Paris, TN. I’m excited to be doing a class on marketing. More information will be released in January.
