This industry of publishing changes so much. Today someone put a post on ACFW that has kept my internet busy. They were informing people of changes, but not everyone on this loop are publishers. Some are Indie Publishers, and if you are, you need to be aware of the changes. Nothing is going to happen tomorrow, and this change was announced about a year ago.
Most of us probably publish with CreateSpace. It is so easy. It is so cheap. It gives good royalties. We can order author copies ahead of publication. Although Amazon owns CreateSpace, they are not going to be keeping some of those great perks we’ve learned to love. I don’t know if the royalties will be the same or not, but they will not allow a publisher to order copies of the author’s books at a discount. Too bad Amazon, because a lot of publishers will be seeking printing from other companies.
Ingram Spark is not my favorite place to publish and distribute my books. I’ve used them before and they are not publisher friendly, or they were not in the past. I hope they have changed, but I doubt it. They charge $45 to publish with them. There are charges to be in their catalog, charges for every little thing, and I don’t appreciate that. But it may be the way we have to go.
Christian Small Publishing Association has worked with Ingram Spark, and the printing cost of $45 will be waived if you are a member. I don’t know exactly how that works, but I’ll be finding out soon.
I’m happy where I am right now with CreateSpace. I won’t deny it. They are much nicer to talk to when you have a problem. They explain things better to people who need a lot of explaining. They are much more helpful. I’ve appreciated them since we started using them about four years ago. What are we going to do? We’ll probably switch to Amazon with our current books. It costs too much to move to Ingram Spark and have to get new ISBN numbers which cost a bunch. Amazon will let us switch and use the same numbers right now. The new books we’ll be publishing may have to go there. It’s a hard decision, especially for someone who doesn’t like change. I know I’ll do a lot of researching and praying to make a decision, and it will take days if not weeks.
My favorite verse in the Bible, Romans 8:28, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
