Wednesdays can be a new beginning. My brain has been working overtime lately with marketing ideas. Writing a book and marketing are two of the most important things an author can do. It’s also two of the most difficult things an author can do.
The process of writing a book can be difficult. You have an idea, but where do you go with that idea. The first book I ever wrote has never seen the light of day. I may bring it out and start over someday, but when I began writing I knew nothing about writing. My writing has improved in the last ten years, but it’s been an effort to get it there.
You may ask why has it been so hard to get my writing to the place where it is today, although I’m sure it can improve. One thing is I get easily discouraged. Critiques drive me mad, but we must have them. I’m learning more about writing with each critique. That is helping. We must write each day in order to be good writers.
What about marketing? We have to market our product each day to be able to be a success. There are different parts and places to market. Most people think social media is the way to go, but they are wrong. No one buys off Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media. Social media is where you make yourself known to the world. I’ve never bought a book from social media, and I don’t think I’m any different from anyone else. To sell your book, you have to use emails.
Why emails? The majority of people will read an email before they will read a social media posts. A lot of social media posts are lost in the shuffle if you do not post on the person’s page daily. It’s called algorithms. The more people comment the closer your post stays at the top of someone’s page. Crazy, but then it’s good also. If you are interested in my posts, you’ll open them. If not, I go further down the page of posts on your page.
After all that, I’m concerned about writers getting the wrong idea about writing and marketing. I’m not the best marketer, but I know a few things about marketing. I’ve listened, taken classes, and talked to people who market a lot. Like your book and your book cover, your idea for a blog must appeal to the masses. You have to start it with something catchy, which I don’t all the time. It’s like the first line of your book. It has to draw them in.
This is what I’m thinking. I’d like to work with authors, mostly first time authors, with their marketing. I will begin working up lessons on marketing to start marketing classes. But first, I’m going to have a marketing blog. One that will come out once a week about marketing only. How to help you sell your book. I don’t have a name yet, but I will by Monday. If you are interested in joining this blog, write me at email@example.com. Put “New Blog” as the header of the email. I’ll send you my free tips on marketing for signing up for the blog. Then we will learn more about marketing each week, and possibly some classes in between. I’d love to hear from you.
