Back in the fall I was invited to Mid-South Christian Writers Conference in Memphis, TN. The previous year I had attended as an attendee and was impressed with the way the conference was run. It was a surprise to be invited as a mentor. I loved every minute of it and saw so many friends, plus made a lot of new ones. After the conference we made our home away from home in Jackson, MS. We have an author who lives close by, plus we have other friends in that area. It was great to get to have dinner with our friends one night. The Cracker Barrel in Pearl, MS will never be the same. The highlight of the whole trip was to find the grave of my great-great grandfather, Henry Spriggs. He died at the Battle of Vicksburg on May 12, 1863, and yes I found his market. It was so good to find the connection with the past, but it is wonderful to be home. because I have a book to tell you about.
Safe Refuge by Pamela S. Meyers is on Amazon right now. You can pre-order the ebook and buy the print book at this time. Pam is a veteran author having written for some of the major publishers. I was shocked that she wanted to publish with us, but it was a good feeling.
This book is set before and after the Great Chicago Fire. It tells about what happened to people after the fire. I’d never thought about where they went or what they did after the fire. Even the businesses were effected by the fire. Pam takes one family and shows what happened to those in high society of that time. It is very well written. In two days, wealthy Chicagoan, Anna Hartwell, will wed a man she loathes. She would refuse this arranged marriage to Lyman Millard, but the Bible clearly says she is to honor her parents, and Anna would do most anything to please her father–even leaving her teaching job at a mission school and marrying a man she doesn’t love. The Great Chicago Fire erupts, and Anna and her family escape with only the clothes on their backs and the wedding postponed. Father moves the family to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where Anna reconnects with Rory Quinn, a handsome immigrant who worked at the mission school. Realizing she is in love with Rory, Anna prepares to break the marriage arrangement with Lyman until she learns a dark family secret that changes her life forever.
