Don’t you just love Wednesdays? The week is half-way over, and we have a weekend ahead of us. I’m looking forward to this weekend. Not so much because it’s a holiday, we’ll have our family here on Friday night, but because I will get to take a breather.
I love my job! Not many people can say that. I love working with people and helping them find their way in the publishing industry. I can truly say I’ve never had a morning that I dreaded getting up.
One of the things that I find important to writing is marketing. It’s so funny how so many people think when they hit the “Publish” button that everyone in the world is going to buy their book. I was one of those people. It really makes you humble when you realize no one knows who you are and they won’t buy your book. The lesson hurts.
When we get a new author, I tell them to start telling people about their book before the ink is dry on their contract. No one will buy a book from someone they have never heard of. We need to start working social media to make ourself known to the world. That is so important to writers. Don’t try to sell your book on social media, start an email list and a blog. This is how you get people to know you and trust you enough to buy your book.
Marketing is something I love to do. I learn all I can about how to market our books, and I teach at conferences. I think I have three this year, and I’m pretty excited. I’ve found through the years that so many people are afraid to market their books. They think everyone will buy them. I’m sorry to tell you, but they won’t.
I’m going to do more marketing in the future. If anyone would be interested in signing up for my class, I’d love to add you to my list. I should start a new class around the middle of April. I’d love to have 100 people to join it.
