Today I want to talk about writing. I love the art of creating words on paper/computer. I also love the art of doing it correctly. That’s what we’re going to talk about today. Correct writing.
Watch your weasel words! If you see you’re beginning a sentence with one certain word all the time, stop and think. I used “just” in almost every sentence when I first started writing. That was my weasel word. I stopped using it, but instead began using “so.” I try not to use any word repeatedly, but I’m sure I do. That is what your editor is supposed to find. It is not good writing to begin each sentence with, “So.”
Another big mistake is the construction of a sentence. I don’t care what genre you’re writing in, good writing always prevails. I’m reading a very good Speculative/Fantasy by Patrick Carr. I’d advise each and every Speculative/Fantasy writer to read any of his books. They are very well written. They are tightly written, no parts flailing about. That makes a good book and one the larger houses will look at.
Showing vs telling is one thing most new authors do. I did when I first started writing. Backstory can always be added later in the story. It doesn’t need to be told up front. Start the story with anything but a lot of telling. That is the best way to keep your book from being published. If someone does publish it, it’s the best way to keep from receiving good reviews and sales. Learn the craft!
We at Mantle Rock Publishing prefer to use curved quotation marks and apostrophes. We see a lot of straight ones. I will ask you to change them if the other editors haven’t caught them before they get to me. We want all quotation marks and apostrophes to be the same in all of our books.
Read your manuscript over before you send it to anyone. Even when you do corrections, read what you’ve done. I don’t want to receive a book for the last read that is full or mistakes. I want it to be as pristine as it can be. You have had possibly a year to write your book. Everything should be in it that you want to put in it, therefore, don’t add sentence after sentence at the last reading. If you do add anything, do it in red so we will know what you’ve added and it can be edited.
Mantle Rock Publishing is well respected in the writing community. We do not put out sloppy books. We want our books to be clean and read well. We pride ourselves in what we do and how well our books look. Take your time to correct and polish your book. We can always change release dates. We don’t like to, but sometimes we have to.
