Wednesdays are what I call my short days. I close my office early to get dinner and get ready for Wednesday Night Bible Study. This is the time I rejuvenate with my church family. I need that time to calm my soul and concentrate for an hour on God and all the blessings He’s given me.
Yesterday I interviewed an author for my podcast and we talked about lists vs schedules. Which do you do?
Personally I like lists. I get nervous when I’m on a schedule and I don’t complete the task on time. Maybe I should work harder to accomplish the task in the shortest time. If I have a list, I love to mark the things off. I feel I’m successful in getting the job done. I’ve talked to other authors about this and each have their own ideas.
Here’s what I do. I don’t write everything down, because some things are a habit. I don’t mark off getting up, dressing, brushing my teeth, making breakfast, etc. Those are givens. We have to do those things. I don’t mark off devotional time. I do mark off blog, emails, editing, writing, and anything else I need to do. Appointments are written in and marked off. This week I have a band concert. Last week was a band concert and college graduation. One band concert this week is a little easier on me.
Let’s think about what you do each day. Do you get up at the same time each day? I don’t. I try to get up between 6 and 7, if I’ve had a good night. For an hour I read the Bible, pray, and do some mind games. This starts my day. After breakfast I go to the computer with my coffee and look at emails and facebook. Then I do a daily devotional on Facebook that I write Monday through Friday, do this blog, and I’m ready to answer emails. If I answer emails before I do the devotional and blog, I’m late on everything for the rest of the day. After my emails are answered I have editing to do until lunch. I’m also judging a writing contest and I’m behind on it. The afternoons are when I like to do my personal writing. Can this list change? You bet. I’m flexible except with the editing, and it has to be done each day.
I like to close the office around four in the afternoons. I do little chores during the day when I need to get away from the computer for a few minutes. At night, if I am behind, I’ll go back to the computer after dinner. This makes a full day, but I love it.
Think about your schedule or list. Are you fulfilling everything you want to do?
