Isn’t it great to be a writer? You get to sit down and let your imagination soar. Imagination is a wonderful thing, but it’s hard to curtail at times. Sometimes it begins to soar when we don’t want it to, like in church in the middle of the preacher’s sermon or in the middle of a prayer. This happens to all of us, but there is a time and a place for everything.
Writing changes from day to day. What used to be the norm isn’t anymore. We use less commas now, and semi-colons are a thing of the past. That’s where editors come in. They know, or should know, when to put commas, or when to not put commas. We used to write, “That sounds great to me, too.” No, not now. No comma! I am so thankful we have a great editor who knows punctuation. She also keeps up with the changes in punctuation and grammar. I never change anything she has done.
One of the most important things in marketing is to have a well-written manuscript. Who wants to buy a book with a lot of mistakes? I know I have one I published with bunches of mistakes, and I haven’t had time to correct them. What do you do if an editor changes something in punctuation that you don’t agree with? Ask the editor. Don’t go on your own and change a lot of punctuation. As the last person who sees the manuscript before publication, I never change any punctuation. I trust my editor to do what needs to be done, but if you change it to the way you think it should be, I’ll change it. I know the editor did her job.
Write your books with the best knowledge you have on writing. Have an editor edit the manuscript. Most editors know what they’re doing. I pay for our editor to do a good job. It helps to sell our books. A sloppy book does not sell. A good book will.
How do you decide what to write? Some people will say write what’s on your heart, or write what you know about. I say write well. Write interesting stories. Even if you don’t know about something you want to write about, you can learn. There is so much stuff to research. Just to wake you up a little, I’ve learned how to launder money for my next book. I’m not going to do it, but I have an idea how to do it. Don’t send the Feds after me, it’s only for the story. I had no idea it could be done. If I did what I’m going to write about, I’d be in jail before tomorrow. I’d get caught. You can only do something for so long before you get caught.
Write what you love. Write what you read. Put your heart and soul in it. Have fun! That’s what writing is about, isn’t it?
