We had a great retreat this year. We’ll begin working on the next one soon. It takes time to get it all finished. In the meantime I’ll be attending and speaking at a retreat in Arkansas in October. I’ll give you more information as I receive it.
Most of you know I’m big on marketing. Marketing is the second most important thing to sell your book. The first important thing is good writing. If your book is not written well, it won’t be bought. It may be bought once, but that is it if the writing is not good. If the writing is not good, no one will recommend the book. It is so hard for me to overlook bad writing, although I’m guilty at some point in my writing career.
During my almost six years in publication the one thing that most authors think is they will be an overnight success. Believe me you won’t! It takes time to build your fan base. It is very hard for me to read a book that is by someone I’ve never heard of. I don’t think I am the only one. Therefore, we need to work constantly to be recognized.
You may market all day long, but if your book doesn’t grab people, you won’t sell many books. Remember to use hooks at the end of each scene and chapter. Make your characters someone the reader will love. Put romance and excitement in your books.
When I first started writing everyone talked about hooks. I worked hard to put hooks at the end of my scenes and chapters, then writers quit talking about them and we all forgot. A good writer makes sure a hook is at the end of the scene and chapter. Something to make the reader turn the page. If your book does not draw a reader in, it will not sell.

We have to work on email lists, blogs, and facebook posts. Podcasts are new and most people are afraid of them, but it is one way to get noticed. Anything to get your name before the public.
When an actor starts their career they do anything to get in noticed in newspapers, magazines, and tv. They are always out in the public talking about what they do. How many of you tell people you are a writer, or do you say it with your hand in front of your mouth so maybe no one will understand that you write books? We have to be our main PR person. We have to promote ourselves. It’s hard work, but it is necessary.
Remember this, no publishing company does all of your advertising. If you do not work to sell books, a large company will not take another book of yours. To grow in the business we must increase our number of sales. Work hard on being recognized outside of your circle of friends. If you want to work on facebook, make friends with the big name authors and comment each day on something they write. Comment on a lot of posts. Get recognized. When your book comes out they will know who you are. Make a plan to succeed in book sales. Know the number of books you want to sell each month. When the number i
