Finally it’s Friday! Between doctor appointments and storms it’s been a hectic week. We are blessed that we are safe and little damage has been done. Also today we have no appointments. Today will be a day or work to try to catch up.
Most people don’t realize how much time writing takes. They think they can sit down and write a book and it will be perfect the first time, or the second time. It doesn’t happen like that.
No matter what genre you are writing, there is always research to do. With the internet we can research so much better, but if you can talk to someone in the field it is so much more helpful. I’ve started a romantic suspense, and I already have my resources lined up. I’ve even talked to someone on the phone about how to do some other underhanded things. It’s fun to do research.
Then the character development. It’s amazing what my character comes up with when I start learning more about them. I like to find pictures of the characters and put them on my character page. Then I only have to do one click to get the information I need about him/her. I’m working on a him right now and it is so much fun.
The scene is very important. Will it be set in a large city or a rural area? Have you seen the place? If you use an imaginary town, you can do what you want. Sometimes you can use both, especially if you want them to travel. The imaginary town can be close to a large city that is real. If you are familiar with the city, then it can be worked in scenes to be believable.
How much do you want to reveal when you begin writing? Do you want to tell your fans about the book? Some authors will say yes, tell them, but others will tell you to wait until it is released. That is up to you. Personally, I like to build a reader up and tell a little along. My Street Team gets inside information. It’s a closed group, so if you want to join you have to ask permission.
Writing can be fun. Developing characters is so much fun whether you are a seat of the pants writer or a plotter. Make your writing enjoyable for you and it will be for the reader.
