One thing to remember is not to be drawn in by the vanity presses. You will pay a lot to have your book published. In fact you will pay too much. They charge thousands of dollars when they tell you they will publish your book. There are several companies out there that make it sound like it’s easy to make a lot of money by publishing with them. No one can guarantee you will make a lot of money. Nothing in life is free. You have to work for it. Even one large traditional company has a vanity press. The hook you by telling you the traditional company may take your book. May is the key word. It doesn’t happen that much.
Let’s talk about self-publishing your book, or Indie publishing. It sounds so easy. You get all the money from the sales of your book. You also pay all the expense in the sale of your book. If you want a good book you will have to pay a cover designer, a formatter, an editor, and sometimes someone to market the book for you.
My mama always told me to make a good impression the first time. Good advice for publishing a book. Your book cover is the first impression for a reader. You want it to be outstanding. Most Indie or self-publishers don’t have the best covers. A lot of them think they can do it themselves or hire a friend to do it. There are certain rules to follow in making a cover. You want everything on the cover to be in proportion. I’ve seen big heads on small bodies, houses that were out of proportion, and a lot more. A good cover designer will know what to do to make a good cover with the correct sizes. It makes a difference.
Make sure your book is edited by someone other than yourself. I’ve noticed lately that several famous authors are now self-publishing their books. I’ve read several that are full of mistakes. Let another set of eyes read your book, a professional editor is best. Yes, as with a cover designer, it costs money. It is money well spent.
Don’t depend on the Word program you use to format your book. It doesn’t look very good. I’ve done it and I know what I’m saying. Spend the money and get a good formatting program. Your book will look so much neater with a good program. If you don’t want to spend the bucks for a format program, have a formatter do it for you. Paying them will make a big difference in your book.
Another thing a lot of self-published authors do is get their ISBN number free from CreateSpace and Amazon. What is the purpose of an ISBN number? The purpose of the ISBN is to establish and identify one title or edition of a title from one specific publisher and is unique to that edition, allowing for more efficient marketing of products by booksellers, libraries, universities, wholesalers and distributors. This is according to www.isbn.org. This shows that my company, Mantle Rock Publishing, published this book.
Yes, it costs to get the ISBN. We’re looking at $125 for one ISBN, $295 for ten ISBNs, and $545 for 100 ISBNs. But the numbers belong to me. My name, or my company name, is on the line where it says, “Published by,” and that’s what I want.
Publishing with a Traditional or Small Press should be cost free. We’ll talk about that next time.
