After the weekend, I’m always slow getting started on Monday’s, then it all piles up on me and I get too busy. Since my husband’s surgery I’ve been behind a lot. He is doing better each day, his healing should give me a little more time to work.
We’ve talked about the different types of publishing. Today I’d like to talk about authors. What does a publisher expect from you as a author?
Years ago the publisher did most of the advertising, set up book signing tours, and really took care of the author. Today it’s a different story. The publisher can do part of the advertising, but most of it is the responsibility of the author. If you’re publishing with a small publisher or a mega publisher, it’s the same.
Each author is expected to keep a website up and going. Some large companies do help the author with this, but most if it is done by the author. Each author is responsible for their own social media. This is important. Each author should respond quickly to each comment. You must bond with your authors. This is how we get sales.
Each author should have an author page on Facebook, and they should be able to respond to comments and keep the conversations moving. Readers want to know you. They want to feel like you are their friend. This is one way to build you platform. Platform is people who are interested in your writing. They are the ones who help with your sales. They will advertise for you and make comments about your book. These friends are our bread and butter. We need to keep them happy.
When you show up for a book signing, you should wear a smile, nicely pressed clothes, and be clean. You sell yourself. It’s that simple. You are a walking advertisement of your book. You want people to like you.
Another thing that is usually expected of authors is a blog or an email list. Both are good. More people read emails than they do Facebook. If you want to sell books, you’ll be writing and getting people to know you and your book. You don’t have to push your book each day, but let people know you’re an author and have a book or books.
I hope this helps you to get an idea of what publishers expect. There are probably more things that can be added, but this gives you a good start.
