Working on your platform, and letting others know you are a writer is scary. You mean I have to tell people that I’m a writer? Yes indeed! You will be surprised at the reaction. Most people will look at you with a shocked expression. “You write books?” I’m still getting this after seven years in the business.
How do you get people to join you in your platform? When that person asks you if you write books, then is the time to say, “Would you like to receive my newsletter?” It’s hard to say no when someone is looking at you. People are surprised when you ask them that one question.
You need people to follow you. People who will buy your book when it comes out. I wear a necklace with the cover of one of my books on it. The cover is reduced, but everyone can see it. I was at a conference last month, and in a class I took, several people wanted to see the necklace. It was something different, and it helps sell books.
Whatever you do, you are building your platform. Publishers and agents look at numbers. We look at your Facebook and Twitter. Don’t give us false numbers, because we will find out about your numbers. That is why it is important to know you have followers on these social media groups. If you work social media, you’ll have a following. Facebook is changing. I encourage authors to go more to their newsletter. Build your newsletter up. If anything happens to Facebook or Twitter, your newsletter followers will still be there.
Since I’m on all week, if you have any questions, ask them in the comments, and I’ll address them.
Have a great evening. I apologize for being so late with this.
