Through the years since we started Mantle Rock Publishing, we have had many blessings from God. As I look back, I can see how good He has been to us, plus a few times we learned from mistakes. Our mistakes can be a learning experience from God.
Everyone always asks how and why Mantle Rock Publishing was started. I thought I would tell my story today. I’ve told it hundreds of times, but it is a good story.
In 2005 my father passed away. I became the caregiver of my mother who had dementia. A friend visited us later and introduced me to writing. Ican still here Wilburta Arrowood tell me, “You can do it. You can write a book.” I think when I sent her the first chapter, she wished she hadn’t said those words. I was hooked on writing.
Wilburta said to write what you knew. I tried, but I never could get my story going. Finally I decided to write a book about the history of the town I lived in, Rogersville, TN, and the Melungeon race of people. I did finish it in 2012 and published it myself. Callie’s Mountain was finally born.
When I began publishing, I only wanted to publish for myself. I never thought I’d do anything for anybody. I knew very little about publishing. As with most things, God had a hand in my publishing company, and the company began to grow. I only wanted to do four books a year, this year we will probably publish eighteen. That’s a lot for a small company.
We now have thirty something authors. Some have written three books and some have written four or more. I like the ones I can depend on to be good writers and want to publish more books with us. We now have three editors. We have taken on partners this year. We invited Pam Harris and Diane Turpin to be our partners. As I get older, I need more help. These are wonderful ladies that want to see the company grow.
At this moment we have no more room to put anyone in 2020. We are being very selective of any books we accept in 2021. The 2021 schedule is filling up, and I do not want to put anyone in 2022 at this time. We also teach a lot of our authors how to write. We take mainly first-time writers. Everyone has to learn sometime.
What does Mantle Rock Publishing look like for the future? A recognized company taking clean and Christian books. We will continue to search for good first-time writers. We will guide writers through the marketing process, but we can only show you want to do. You have to do the real work.
I enjoy what I do with Mantle Rock Publishing, and I look forward to working a few more years. We are not going to close our doors. We hope to grow more good writers. We look for honest, thoughtful writers who enjoy what they are doing. We look forward to many more years of publishing.
