I rarely give 5 stars for a book, but this one won out. Pamela Meyers set the scene and fleshed out the characters so well that I felt like I was there. I hadn’t thought about the complete devastation caused by the Chicago fire in 1871. Neither had I considered arranged marriages to benefit families financially at the time in Chicago.
Anna was torn between fleeing from an arranged wedding to a man she loathed and obeying her parents. To save face, she didn’t want to tell her parents that Lyman physically abused her. I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but there were a few surprises along the way.
I was given this book as a free gift by the author, but that did not influence my review.
