This question is asked of me several times during the year. “What are you looking for?” The best answer to this question is, “well written manuscript.” That is the top thing we look for when Pam Harris and I decide whether to take a manuscript or not. If your manuscript/proposal is not written well, we won’t take it.
Next we look at your writing. Do the words flow well? Do you feel you know the characters? What about grammar and punctuation? These are all things we look for. If we are going to have to take weeks and weeks to edit a book that is not well written, we can’t afford to do it. That’s why it’s always good to have someone edit your book before you send it to an agent/publisher.
The genres we like to publish are Christian Romance, Clean Romance, Christian Romantic Suspense, Christian Historical Romance, and Christian Suspense. A book that keeps your eyes glued to the pages is what we are looking for.
After we read the first three chapters, we look at the marketing plan. We expect each author to follow their plan. I guess what I want to say nicely, don’t lie to us. If you are not going to follow through with your marketing plan, we don’t want to represent you.
I like to see you working through social media and newsletters. Every want-to-be author should be on social media and have a newsletter. We feel very strong about marketing, and this is the best way. Authors kill themselves doing a lot of book signings. Most of our sales are on Amazon, so why not take advantage of the internet?
After 2020, we will not be taking any fantasy. This is a decision we have made because we don’t see the increase in sales in fantasy. We have tried it, but it hasn’t worked. Our readers are not teens, but women who love to read.
